Well, we waited a respectable three weeks for the honoree to make her
way to this fun-filled location. When we could wait no longer, we
high-tailed it to Red Bluff. We are so glad we did! We drove to
Redding on Sunday, locating 6 letterboxes during the day. We stayed
overnight in Red Bluff so that we could get an early start, to beat
the heat. We were at the "Theme Park" location by 7:15 and left at
10:30 this morning. We found the Funhog Lake Plateau box, all 15 of
the Hog Heaven Theme Park boxes, Macon the HH, and the Mr. Bill HH.
The walk was challenging because of the heat and the foxtails,
nettles, and other thorns. But the rewards were incredible. There
are 15 amazingly clever carvers who have contributed to this series.
And in some cases the letterboxes themselves rival the carvings. This
is a DON'T MISS IT experience for boxing fanatics! In order to help
make this a letterboxing mecca, we left two additional boxes on the
plateau. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!!!

Oh, you beat us to it! We have a trip planned this Thursday that sounds
pretty much like yours. We'll venture up Thursday after work (taking Friday
off--see how important this series is?!), spend the night in Red Bluff and get up
early to beat the heat on Friday. We'd like to get them all by noon or
thereabouts.
Although we'd planned to get this fun and amazing series of boxes no matter
what (the list of placers and carvers is a real "Who's Who" of letterboxing!),
hearing that they're as stellar as all that makes us really eager. Good to
know about the nettles and thorns so we can dress accordingly. Thanks!

WOW! This sounds incredible. I missed any kind of annoucement of it. It certainly does seem like the crme de la crme of the boxing community. & remember there's also the original eponymious FunHog Lake Plateau box too. I got that one in May & can confirm the need for long pants or high boots with the weeds. Boots would be better because the ground is so rocky & uneven that strong ankle support would be advisable too.

Howdy!
Black Cavalier--saw your note about the terrain. Is this a place
where a big-wheeled jogging stroller could go, or do I need to break
out the baby-backpack? Saw the series just yesterday and I'm just
waiting for the weather to cool for this one.

Definitely a backpack. No way a stroller will get through there, unless it's made by Hummer. Also, be very careful of the heat with the little one. There's some shade, but expect it to be easily over 100 degrees & probably over 105 during the middle of the day. Also, it's mainly a rock plain that happens to has grass on it, so the radiant heat from the ground will still probably get you even in the shade.

When we were at Hog Heaven Theme Park on Monday, it was early
morning. We each consumed about 40 ounces of water. It was hot and
hotter, thorns were abundant, and boulder scrambling was part of the
fun. Not child friendly by any means, unless you have a partner to do
the scrambling. On the other hand, it's an awesome environment and
super boxing experience.

I went for a romp in the park thursday. I went alone and got a late
start, 9:30 from the parking lot. It was HOT, but I brought lunch and
a lot of water. I started out by finding the geocach. Good thing to
because I used some of the sunscreen I found in it. I took me quite a
while to find the 15 boxes and Macon HH. I didn't leave until 3:30. I
figure I drank 80 ounces of water, and on the way back to Redding for
pork chops for dinner, the bank sign in Red Bluff read 105 degrees.
Pigmalion could use some maintence. The box has broken and cannot be
sealed. It could use a bigger box.

We will be going by there on Tuesday and plan to bring a replacement box at
that time. We noticed Pygmalion's 'house' was having a bit of a space issue.

What!!!! it is in a bigger box!!! Did you take your backhoe to help
you with the plant? Have you ever seen anything that audacious in your
letterbox finds? Thanks for the work as I'm not sure we will be going

I might have an opportunity to try for these this weekend. I wanted to
make sure I didn't miss any of the new boxes after the original 15 were
planted. Looks like Doublesaj & Old Blue, RetiredHavingFun,
artTrekker, & Grumpy Grinch (placed 2) have all added to the park. Are
there any others I missed? From those that have done it, about how long
does it take with reasonable, but not perfect, luck on the clues? Even
though I've been out on the plateau to get Fun Hog's initial plant
before the theme park was "built", any suggestions for this epic
undertaking? Water, sun screen?
Thanks, Black Cavalier

Hi BC,
While I'm not sure about those letterboxes planted afterwards and
added to the pool, I would figure one complete day + if the weather
is not too hot. If you started very early in the morning and had a
good day then the original bunch should be able to be found before
the late afternoon. If it turns hot then I would do what you can and
return another morning. While that not be what you want to do, you
have to remember that eventually there will be more pigs joining the
party, and you will probably return in the future in any case. Bring
and drink lots of water and per the Kool Kats lace it with Mosquito
repellant to your own taste.
BTW wear blaze orange as hunting season is open.

It took me about five hours and two gallons of water to find those
wonderful boxes. I absolutely cannot wait to find the newest addition
by artTrekker. If you find a little piggy pink Cat's Eye inkpad out on
the plateau, three guesses who lost it... Funhog

Don,
I'm a little disappointed that you would broadcast a Kool Kat trail
survival tip that we told you in confidence, off line. Now everyone
will know.
I thought you were only a little crazy in the a.m. when you first wake
